Simultaneous Parallel Runway Operations
August 24, 2000
Notice from:
U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation
Administration, Southern Region
DeKalb Peachtree Air Traffic Control Tower, Chamblee, GA 30341
Background:
During a Full Facility Evaluation it was identified that FAA
Order 7110.65, paragraph 3-8-3, requires 700' between runway centerlines to
conduct simultaneous same direction operations on parallel runways with larger
than twin engine props. DeKalb Peachtree Airport (PDK) has 500' between the
centerlines for Runway 2L/20R and 2R/20L. With the existing centerline
separation, PDK may conduct simultaneous same direction parallel runway
operations with twin engine propeller driven aircraft or smaller; however,
simultaneous operations with larger than twin engine props are not authorized.
Procedures:
Effective immediately, discontinue simultaneous same direction
operations on Runway 2L/20R and Runway 2R/20L when either aircraft is larger
than a twin engine prop. Simultaneous operations are defined as aircraft
arriving and/or departing on the parallel runways and on the runway at the
same time. The intent of the interpretations, which was received during the
evaluation, is that the Agency does not want aircraft wingtip to wingtip on
final, landing roll or departure roll. Simultaneous operations do not include
aircraft taxiing, crossing, or in position and holding on the parallel runway.
Simultaneous operations are not authorized when either aircraft is larger than
a twin engine prop.
